Adding hardware to your kitchen is an easy way to add convenience to your kitchen with an upgraded look. It doesn't take much to give your kitchen the feel of a makeover. Door handles and pulls add a newly remodeled look to your home without stripping the whole place down to the foundation. Installation is easy and simple enough to do yourself, yet it provides a fresh satisfaction and can greatly improve your home. Consider these tips to installing door handles and pulls.

Do the Math

Count all cabinet doors and cupboards that need pulls. Decide whether you want the same pulls on the cupboards as well as the drawers or if you prefer the variety of door handles instead. Write down the number of each part you'll need.

Go Shopping

Pick out the door handles or pulls from a home improvement, department or

China Furniture Hardware supplier. For some pulls or door handles, you'll need to special order them. Don't go with the first ones you see. There are a variety of styles, so sift through a complete selection to find the one that best fits the décor of your home. Different rooms in the house can take different styles, depending on your decoration needs.

Mark the Spot

Decide where on the door the handles or pulls will go. Blue painters tape or masking tape can mark the area without permanent damage. If you have handles with multiple screws, measure the length between the screws for precision. Use a level to make sure that the holes are in line.

Drill Away

Drill a 3/16 inch hole on the door. Put the screw in to verify the fit, and adjust the hole accordingly. Drill holes on each door. Remove tape and discard it.

Insert Screws

Insert the screw into the first hole. First twist the knob into the pull or door handle by hand, and then tighten with a screw driver. Check the knob for security. Install the remainder of the pulls or door handles.

Add Washers if Necessary

If the handle or pull does not fit securely, add washers where necessary. Use shorter screws if adding washers aren't enough. Take the pull with you to the store to purchase screws with the correct diameter.
